Blog about doing business internationally.

Profits are the main motivation for starting any form of business. Before the effective realization of strong returns for every dollar, minute, and effort put into the business, careful planning, wise judgment, and systematic implementation of the plan is always required. The farming industry is no exception to this norm and, like all businesses, it adheres fervently to these principles. It is critical to remember that only those who approach the farming industry correctly, with the right mindset and a willingness to invest a significant amount of patience, can profit. The discussion that follows aims to highlight some of the key factors that a new farmer should take into account when launching a new farming enterprise.

Land size and tenure

The sort of farming and the kinds of projects that could be done on that plot of land depend greatly on the farm’s maximum size. For instance, if someone were granted a 50-ha plot, they would never be able to imagine industrial beef breeding due to the area size. The ability to go in a certain route with regard to farming decisions is also determined by one’s position or security of tenure. It is unlikely that someone would start building such expensive infrastructure as cutting-edge dairy parlors on a farm that is not their own unless the conditions of the lease indicate that there will be some form of remuneration for long-term farm improvements. The period of the lease or ownership is crucial in planning, particularly when large-scale physical activities like the construction of dams are involved.

Agro-ecological region

There can be no doubt that the climatic conditions present at the farm in question have a significant impact on judgments regarding the crops to cultivate as well as the size of the business. Only seldom are there exceptions that can be discussed, such as when greenhouses allow for the manipulation of the microclimate and crops grow outside of their intended geographic areas. Given the influence of climate on agriculture concerning ambient temperature and rainfall in case of rain-fed operations or even sufficiency of the same to harness for irrigation or livestock rearing purposes, the agroecological region under which the farm falls dictates what can be done or not done.

Soils, vegetation, and water resources

The type of soil also affects the kind of business one can start; for instance, sandy soils are good for growing tobacco, whereas deep, well-drained loams are better for growing crops like potatoes. Such aspects are quite difficult to ignore. Regarding browseable herbs (such as acacia species) and whether the grass veld is sweet or sour, vegetation type has a stronger impact on animal enterprises. Because the type of vegetation may easily be used to infer the soil properties in that location, vegetation is also useful in determining if a piece of land is suitable for a variety of uses. A high water table and territory that is prone to flooding, for example, can be indicated by the presence of water-berry plants. This means that such a sward can be avoided, especially if the land is being prepared for crops that need well-drained soils. During the planning stage, it is essential to evaluate the sufficiency of surface water resources and the possibility of obtaining them from other sources. This is true because if someone realizes how limited water is, they may look into the possibility of drilling a borehole. If that still does not provide enough water, one is obliged to think about farming ventures that don’t need a lot of water.

Choose the right enterprise(s)

A farmer can then choose one or more businesses based on what their farm can accomplish for them, as illustrated above. Depending on the range of options at their site, one can decide to integrate, conduct mixed farming, or specialize.
