The economy of the country

Agricultural accounts for almost one-third of its gross domestic product. While staple foods such as yams, bananas, etc. are grown in the archipelagoes of the north, in the  Highlands, gardens dominate the landscape. Almost all commercial crops are exported out of the country. Forest exploitation has been extensive, with logs often accounting for one-tenth of the value of national exports. Despite the potential of tuna fisheries, issues of licenses being sold cheaply and fishing zones mismanaged affecting the revenue generated from the industry.

Start a tourism business

We all know starting a company is a lot challenging yet rewarding in terms of profits. In the same light, starting a tourism venture is a bit tasking but rewarding. This island is the second largest. It has incredible biodiversity, unique cultures, and natural scenery. If you are looking to set up a tourism business here, then the following are some steps for you to follow:

Conduct market research

Before doing business, it is pertinent to research the market and know how well people want your services. The research must cover the types of tourism activities that are already available on the island and the kinds of tourists visiting the island. This will also inform you of the potential gaps in the market and areas to specialize in.

Develop a business plan

With a business plan, the business owner identifies key details as regards the business, such as the target market, market strategy, source of revenue, and costs. It can also be used to source funding from investors or banks.

Register your business

Operating an enterprise within the territory requires registration. You have to register your business with the government while acquiring any necessary permits or licenses.

Choose a location

As a vast and diverse island, choosing the right location that is suitable for the type of tourism business one wish to set up is important. Some popular places include the stunning Raja Ampat islands for diving and snorkeling, the Baliem Valley for trekking and cultural immersion, or the Sepik River for a unique river journey experience.

Hire employees

To ensure the success of the tourism business, you need to employ workers who are knowledgeable about the island, welcoming and friendly, as well as able to provide customer service. For example, drivers, dive instructors, trekking guides, housekeeping staff, et cetera.

Promote the business

Promote the business to potential customers by making advertisements. This could be online or offline via social media, websites, prints, papers, etc. A good promotion gives you an edge over your competition.

Starting a tourism business within the island may just be the best opportunity for you to share in the beauty and culture of the island. However, you might likely face certain challenges and cultural sensitivities that might arise from running a business in such a unique and diverse place. Fortunately, with good and careful planning including lots of hard work, you can end up having a successful and profitable business.
