ICT

The concepts tele and communication, which both signify connection in Latin, are the ancestors of the word telecommunication. The conveyance of meaningful information over great distances from one point (the sender, transmitter, or source) to another location is known as telecommunication (the receiver, or destination). The phrase “telecommunication” is now used extremely broadly to denote the transport of information by wired (copper or fiber) or wireless media. Also, it refers to all the hardware and software required for its transmission and reception. Early in 1939, the first electronic computer debuted; in 1941, communications and computers were united. Since the early 1980s, when desktop computers and the Internet first came together, there has been a rapid expansion of computer applications.

Telecommunications in Yemen

All of the Republic of Yemen’s governorates and the majority of its local districts are connected by a reliable digital telecommunications network. A 34, 140 Mbps digital microwave system is used by the Public Telecommunication Cooperation (PTC) National Network, with a few 8 Mbps lines to the smaller switching centers. A Rural Telecommunications Master Plan, recently completed by the PTC, explains its plan to improve and modernize the current telecommunication services in all directions. The following are the stages of its execution between (2002-2025) as the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology seeks to finish the projects:

Fixed telecommunications and mobile

Yemen has devised a vision that calls for the network capacity of fixed telephone and mobile phones to be 5.5 million lines, respectively, in 2025. This is to attain the prevalence of 15 lines per 100 people.

Internet and personal computers

There would be 6.2 million computers in use in 2025, 260 people per 10,000 people will be Internet users, and there will be 70 people per 10,000 people hosting websites.

Expanding the network of rural

Due to Yemen’s challenging topography and the small, dispersed population, it is challenging for institutions to provide services to smaller communities using the same telecommunication infrastructure found in big cities.

Internet in Yemen

A network of data networks made up the history of the Internet. Internet services were launched here in 1996 with a single provider “TeleYemen,” a venture between UK’s Cable & Wireless (51%) and Yemen’s government (49%) that managed the country’s international communications. TeleYemen then contracted with British firms Mercury Communications and Pipex to provide an international connection to the Internet.

Information technology in Yemen

In ways that are unmatched in history, information technology (IT) has altered the world. The IT-enabled information and knowledge-based industries are already dominating the global economy. In fact, by engaging in activities like offering e-services to rich countries, developing and underdeveloped nations have a special potential to earn hard currency. One other benefit of this knowledge, and information-based companies is that, in contrast to most other operations, they do not disrupt ecosystems or pollute the air.

The private sector will be able to participate in more lucrative and environmentally friendly e-businesses and build specialist training in the field of IT. Thanks to the enhancement of traditional enterprises’ performance through IT. This transition to the IT sector would lessen the strain on the nation’s natural resources and, practically support the government’s strategy to prevent the widespread exploitation of Yemen’s resources. Yemen has started down the information technology road to becoming a top-tier consumer and supplier of IT.
